The North American Bass Challenge held its Big Fish event on Kentucky Lake at Paris Landing on September 16^th.  One angler was destined to walk away with $5000 plus in winnings with just a single fish.  Anglers had four different, two-hour periods in which they could weigh one fish per period.  Cash and prizes were awarded to the three biggest fish of each of the four periods and then the three biggest fish of the entire day were awarded more cash and prizes.

Carl Lee started off by winning the first period with a nice 3-10 lunker.  Kimmy Perryman nearly doubled that weight to win period two with a huge green fish that weighed 6-02 pounds.  Eric Law would have none of that and brought his 6-15 giant to win period three.  The final period was taken by Coleton Jennings with a solid 4-00 largemouth.

Eric Law won the Overall division with the 6-15 lunker and claimed the $5000 cash prize.  Kimmy Perryman took second overall and a nice prize package for his 6-02 he weighed in the second period.  Barry Burton pulled double duty by finishing third overall for a 5-09 that was weighed in period 3 to claim some nice prizes.  He then doubled up as he was the highest finishing Garmin owner and claimed the $500 Garmin Bonus Check.

The anglers were kind of split on how they were catching their fish.  Some anglers said they were still finding quality fish in 8-15 feet of water, while others said there was barely enough water to cover the fins on the fish they were catching.  Soft plastics and jigs were doing most of the damage on Kentucky Lake during the event.

The Annual Fall Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament was another huge success.  There was a lot of money raised for the local groups that Pamp’s Marine supports.  The fish did their part as well and bit like sharks.  Anglers reported catching numerous limits during the day with some teams culling up to fifteen to twenty times during the day.  As normal with the Northern bodies of water, the brown fish dominated the weigh-in.

Adam Neu and Grant Ehlenfeldt topped the stacked field of anglers and brought 26-12 pounds to the scales, to take home the win and the Fall event “Bragging Rights”.  Just behind them in second place was Jake Becker and Tyler Meuller with a 25-02 sack.  Jimmy Doering and Dylan Jennerjohn hammered 24-15 to finish third.  Sid Johnson and Griffin Cole took fourth place with a nice 23-05 limit of brown fish.  Rounding out the top five was Steven Nooyen and Neil Vandervest with an even 23 pounds.  The Big Bass of the day went to the winners when they weighed a 5-14 lunker smallmouth.

Most teams said they caught several limits and culled a good part of the day.  They were catching them anywhere from 18 to about 30 feet deep on small plastics.  They had a great day of sunshine and a light breeze and not much wave activity.

Don’t forget to mark your 2024 calendar for the Spring Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament.  It is usually the weekend following Mother’s Day each year and is a two-day event.  Check with Pamp’s Marine for all the details.

North American Bass Challenge held a Big Fish event at Sturgeon Bay at Sawyer Park recently.  Anglers faced off against each other to see who could not only catch the biggest fish in each of the four, two-hour periods, but at the end of the day, who weighed the largest fish of the entire day.

The bite was tough, first thing in the morning and many of the anglers made a long run to try and find the bigger fish.  So, there were no fish brought to the scales in Period 1.  Period two was won by young Evan Gundy with a hefty 6-02 lunker.  The third period saw Ron Heim bring in a massive 6-08 smallmouth for the period win.  The last period was claimed by lady angler, Christi Ferron for her 6-02 brownie.

When the dust settled, Ron Heim won the Overall Category worth $1500 for his 6-08 bronzeback.  Adam Palazzo claimed second overall with a nice 6-05 that he weighed in Period 3.  Evan Gandy won the tie-breaker for third overall with a pretty 6-02 beast.  Congratulations to all the winners!

Anglers said that the rain, cloudy skies and no wind really hindered the bite.  Most anglers reported only catching a limited number of fish and the bites were few and far between.  But still most said tubes and small plastics in anywhere from 10-25 feet of water is where they were catching fish.
